What is red light therapy?
Red light therapy (RLT) is a wellness treatment that uses low-energy red light to support the body’s natural recovery processes. You may also hear it called photobiomodulation (PBM) or low-level laser therapy (LLLT).
RLT works by delivering red light energy to your cells, where it can help stimulate the mitochondria (often called the “powerhouses” of cells). Mitochondria help produce cellular energy that powers normal functions in the body. When cells have more energy available, they may be better supported in their natural repair and recovery.
Benefits of red light therapy (RLT)
People use whole-body red light therapy for a variety of wellness and appearance-focused goals. Results vary from person to person.
Red light therapy for skin

Red light therapy is commonly used to support the look and feel of skin, including:
-
The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (forehead lines, crow’s feet, smile lines, under-eye lines)
-
The appearance of redness, scars, and uneven texture
-
Mild to moderate acne
-
Support for skin concerns such as eczema and psoriasis
-
The appearance of sun-damaged skin and stretch marks
Red light therapy for hair + scalp
RLT is often used to support:
-
Scalp health
-
The look of thicker, fuller hair and new growth
Red light therapy for muscles + joints
RLT may be used on many muscle and joint areas to support:
-
Swelling, pain, and inflammation
-
Circulation and blood flow
-
Common “itis” concerns (like tendonitis)
-
Sprains, fractures, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, and bunions
Red light therapy for lungs
Some people use RLT to support symptoms related to:
-
Asthma, bronchitis, COPD, coughing
-
Post-op recovery, respiratory illness, swelling, swollen nodes, and tight lungs
Red light therapy for lymph support
RLT is sometimes used to support:
-
Circulation and drainage, helping the body move cellular waste and support lymph “choke points”
Red light therapy for thyroid support
Some people use RLT to support symptoms related to:
-
Goiter, Hashimoto’s, hypothyroidism, and nodules
-
Supporting thyroid health, metabolism, and healthy hormone production

How often should you do red light therapy?
RLT can be used every day to every other day. If you’re just starting, using it more consistently may help you build collagen levels faster.
A common routine is 3–4 times per week for the first month, then dropping down to a couple times per week for maintenance.
Can I do red light therapy before or after tanning?
Yes. Red light therapy is best before tanning because it can open pores and allow UV to penetrate the skin better.
Can I do red light therapy and a spray tan on the same day?
Yes—you can do both the same day. If you’re getting a VersaSpa spray tan, do Red Light Therapy first, then spray tan after. Red Light Therapy works best on clean, dry skin, and doing it before your tan helps prevent smudging, streaks, or patchiness while your DHA is setting.
Do I need special lotions or serums for red light therapy?
Yes. While red light can be absorbed on product-free skin, we recommend using an enhancer or hybrid lotion, especially if planning on tanning afterward.
What should I wear for red light therapy?
Wear as little as you’re comfortable with so the light can reach your skin (most clients do underwear or a swimsuit). Avoid anything tight or heavy that covers the areas you want to treat.
Do I need to remove makeup or skincare?
How soon will I notice results?
Some people notice a glow or reduced tightness quickly, but best results typically come with consistency—most clients start noticing more visible changes after a few weeks of regular sessions.
Is red light therapy safe for sensitive skin?
Generally, yes—it’s non-UV and gentle for most people. If you have very reactive skin or a medical condition, start with shorter/less frequent sessions and check with your healthcare provider if you’re unsure.
